New handbooks for those who work with tile are now available from TCNA covering installation and ANSI standards. These publications give the most up to date information available on new and revised standards, guidelines, and practices.
2017 TCNA Handbook for Ceramic, Glass, and Stone Tile Installation
A guide to assist in clarifying and standardizing installation specifications for tile. Each installation recommendation, or method, requires a properly designed, constructed, and prepared substructure using materials and construction techniques that meet nationally recognized material and construction standards. Included are: product selection guides for ceramic, glass, and stone tiles; guidelines for wet areas; ISO mortar and grout specifications; information on substrate flatness requirements; information on grout joint sizes and patterns, and workmanship standards excerpted from ANSI installation standards.
Note: The printed edition of the 2017 Handbook is currently in production, and it is estimated that hard copies will be available for purchase by August 23rd.
ANSI A108, A118, and A136 Material and Installation Standards
New Edition Released March 2017
This compilation includes industry standards for mortars, grouts, membranes, and cement backer board, and installation standards for ceramic and glass tile.* 2017 updates include:
- revised language to allow non-linear (e.g. saw-tooth) movement joints in specified conditions for movement joints to follow grout joints in off-set patterns
- revised language on running bond/brick joint
patterns, to expand applicability of the language
to any off-set pattern for tiles with an off-set side
greater than 15″ (previously 18″)

ANSI A137.1-2017 American National Standard Specifications for Ceramic Tile
Release date: August 2017
This publication presents voluntary standard specifications for ceramic tile. It lists and defines various types, sizes, physical properties, and grading procedures for ceramic tile, including mosaic tile, quarry tile, pressed floor tile, glazed wall tile, porcelain tile, trim units, and specialty tile. This standard provides quality criteria for buyers, specifiers, installers, manufacturers, and the public in general. It is intended for reference or inclusion in the ceramic tile section of project specifications and contracts. NOTE: This standard includes the testing method and requirement for dynamic coefficient of friction.
Changes to A137.1-2012 (Version 2013.1) were balloted and approved in 2017. The latest edition of this standard is A137.1-2017. Purchasers of the hard copy of A137.1 will receive A137.1-2012 and a printed Update to A137.1. Together these documents comprise A137.1-2017. To obtain an edition of A137.1-2017 with changes integrated, the digital version must be purchased.
Advance Copy* – ANSI A137.3 and A108.19-American National Standard Specifications for Gauged Porcelain Tile and Gauged Porcelain Tile Panels/Slabs
American National Standard Specification A137.3 describes the minimum physical properties and grading procedures for gauged porcelain tiles and gauged porcelain tile panels/slabs. It provides quality criteria for buyers, specifiers, installers, manufacturers, and the public in general. Gauged means manufactured to a thickness that is specific and largely associated with installation and use. Tile panels/slabs are those that are one square meter in facial area or larger. Some of the key issues addressed by this standard are:
- Floor, wall, and countertop strength criteria for “Table 4” gauged products that have a declared nominal thickness within the range of 5.0 to 6.5 mm
- Wall and countertop strength criteria for “Table 5” gauged products that have a declared nominal thickness within the range of 3.5 to 4.9 mm
- Thickness accuracy and precision criteria
- Provisions for sampling and visual inspection, considering tile panels/slabs can be very large
- Provisions for gauged products with back layer reinforcing
American National Standard A108.19 provides procedures and requirements for interior installation of gauged porcelain tiles and gauged porcelain tile panels/slabs. These products require unique installation and workmanship considerations, and some of the key issues addressed by this standard addresses include:
- Floor and wall installation procedures for ANSI A137.3 “Table 4” gauged products
- Wall installation procedures for ANSI A137.3 “Table 5” gauged products
- Substrate requirements
- Lippage criteria and use of lippage control systems
- Unique coverage criteria and evaluation procedures
- Special floor setting provisions that involve embedding by walking

ANSI A326.3: New DCOF Standard
Whether you’re manufacturing, specifying, selling, installing, or maintaining hard surface flooring, it’s important to understand dynamic coefficient of friction (DCOF) and slip resistance requirements. ANSI A326.3 is the industry standard for testing the DCOF of hard surface flooring material. It includes methods for laboratory and field testing, as well as guidance on specifying hard surface flooring materials.
