Standard for Fiberglass Mesh Reinforcement
10/30/2012 10:00:00 AM

Q: Is there a standard for the application of fiberglass mesh reinforcement on the backs of slabs? Is it a polyester or epoxy that is used to attach it?

A: No, there is no standard. In the fabrication facilities that I’ve visited I would say that today, epoxy is more common than polyester. But there is no control over what is used and there generally is no disclosure on the part of the producer. It could be epoxy, polyester or any variety of adhesives. As shipping rules and declarations become increasingly more stringent, I suspect we will soon see a requirement that the product be declared on MSDS documents, since it could be significant for emergency personnel to be aware of it in the case of fire.
